Coloured walls, Blank walls, textured walls, or walls filled with art? These are often the questions we ask ourselves when moving house or redecorating. Questions that should rightly be at the top of our lists, our environment has a huge impact on our productivity, imagination, and inspiration. We spend the majority of our time in our homes maby we should pay more attention with what we fill it up with.
The personal spaces in our home set the stage for many moments in our lives. The way you furnish your home, paint your walls, and arrange your belongings will all have significant impacts on our sense of security and well-being. This is easy to see in children. Without knowing kids will create nests in their bedrooms. They fill their beds and their spaces with the things they love. They want their room to feel personalized, but also safe and protected from the influence of parents or siblings. A “keep out of my room” sign is not rebellion as much as it is an attempt to create a private haven.
The business world also pays attention to the psychological effects of interior design. Corporate designers use colour, lighting, textures, and artwork to create motivating, uplifting spaces that will promote efficiency and creative inspiration. No wonder big tech HQs such as those of Google, Apple and Facebook all have bright, colourful offices with quirky features like climbing walls and secret revolving bookcases. Retail businesses do this too, have you ever walked into a store and instantly felt at home and relaxed? They do this by the colours, smell, and décor they have around their store. (Most stores try to trigger purchasing behaviour in customers so don’t fall for it!)
Home decor has been transformed from a fashion symbol to a reflection of our personalities. No longer do we need to adhere to the strict rules of decorating, the world has now shifted and accepted almost all types of expression. We now have the freedom to design the place we spend most of our time however we like.
For homes that are dull and dreary, art can easily spruce them up, but the effects go further than that. Studies have shown viewing art can have a positive impact on your mood and mental health. We also know that the colours we surround ourselves with can have an intense effect on our psyche. Think about why red is used for warning signs, it tends to get people to react faster and encourages a call to action. Blue, in turn, can suggest stability and safety while purple can evoke a feeling of Wisdom, Bravery, and Spirituality. However, in general, some people are more susceptible to the influence of colour than others.
Personal tastes and experiences greatly influence how people react to art. But we know that having beauty and personal expressions are one of the most effective ways to create spaces that feel welcoming and restorative. Surround yourself with pieces that bring you joy and represent your personality. Self-expression is a huge part of achieving happiness, and art is the perfect way to show everyone your unique taste.
